What is Still Life?
A still life is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically everyday natural things (food, flowers, dead animals, plants, rocks, shells, etc.) or man-made things (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, etc.) Still life artworks all use art elements and principles, but different styles and movements of art use them differently. Styles and movements are often classified by different historical times. We will take a look at some of the different artists still life over the years: |

- Find three images of different still life artworks from three different artists. ( You can use the artists above) Add the title, year and name of the artist to the image.

- Choose one of their artworks (you can find one different to those below)
- Write the title and date of their artwork.
- Identify materials and techniques of the artwork (painting, what kind of painting? You will need to research this)
- Art elements: Describe three art elements you can see in the artwork (list and describe)
- Art principles: Describe how one of the art elements identified above has been used to create a specific art principle
- Identify the visual qualities of the work (what is the mood or feeling of the artwork?)

Still Life Artists
Below are four different Still Life Artist from different art movements.

Paul Cezanne was a French artist. He was mainly a post-impressionist painter. Cezanne's work influenced the change of art movements, developing an art movement known as cubism. Cezanne painted a lot of still lifes during his career and often concentrated on the same objects over and over again.

Henri Matisse was a very well known French artist. He was well known for his use of colour and original style.
Mattise create sculptures, prints but mostly painters. He focused on still life painting during the 20th century, retaining his use of colour. Matisse believed that colour had a therapeutic power and exaggerated colour for expressive effect in his work. |
Roberto Bernadi
1974- Style: Contemporary/ Photorealisitic Still Life |
Roy Lichtenstein was an American pop artist best known for his boldly-colored parodies of comic strips and advertisements. Hew was one of the only pop artists to focus on still life within his artworks. He used bright, bold colours with defined shapes and patterns.

Roberto Bernadi is an incredible Italian painter who creates photo-realistic/hyperrealistic artworks. Primarily, he paints candies and also has created still life including candies, lolly jars, fruits and other objects. Notice the refined detail, forms and colours in his artwork, focusing on reflections and transparency. He uses oil on canvas for his works.
